3D digitization is part of the product development sequence:

  • Either upstream, based on an existing product or a design mock-up to integrate it within the design process.
  • Or downstream, during dimensional control.

how does the 3D scan work?

PHOTOGRAMMETRY (TRITOP)

This technique allows measurements to be taken using photographs of the same object from different perspectives. The software that processes the images is then in a position to measure precisely the 3D coordinates relating to any feature of interest.

We use this technique to identify the coordinates of round reference stickers which have been attached to an object or placed nearby.

We can therefore use the resultant data in three ways:

  • As straightforward measurement data, giving you the equivalent of a three-dimensional coordinate measuring machine (or CMM) to measure large items without needing to touch them.
  • As an indispensable tool to enhance precision when repositioning different images from our 3D scanner.
  • As a tool to measure static irregularities.

3D SCANNER WITH PROJECTING LIGHT FRINGES (ATOS)

The principal behind fringe projection techniques (also known as structured light scanning) relies on a grating technique which consists in projecting an irregular light pattern onto the object to be scanned and recording the irregularity of the pattern using high definition cameras. The software can then determine the spatial coordinates of a matrix of points projected onto the surface of the object to be scanned.

The device is equipped with a range of lenses and interchangeable camera supports to adapt properly to the dimensions of objects to be scanned.

The object is then measured from a number of different angles. These measurements are then reset in real time and compared and contrasted with each other in the same framework using the stickers located on the object and the result of the photogrammetry.

DELIVERABLES

Once the digitisation is complete, a tightly-packed point cloud is produced which perfectly reconstructs the global dimensions of the object as well as showing off its detail in pin-sharp resolution. We offer the following file formats:

  • File type: Point Cloud

Format: ASCII TXT

Description: The point cloud is the raw file produced by the equipment. It is sent in the form of a text file which contains the coordinates of the three axes at every point.

For:  minimal cost, unprocessed data from the scanner

Against: difficult to use; poor visualisation

  • File type: Polygon

Formats : Stl vrml ply obj

Description : A polygon file is a mesh comprised of a large number of triangles. They are used in animations, rapid prototyping and graphics. The majority of CAD/CAM software is unable to import or process this file type.

For: Minimal cost, optimisation and editing is possible. May be used straight away for graphics, animation and rapid prototyping applications.

Against: Large data files which are difficult to use without specialist software
